Brief information about the Orenburg region

The Orenburg region is a subject of the Russian Federation. It was formed on December 7, 1934 by separation from the Middle Volga region. From 1938 to 1957, it bore the name Chkalov Oblast.

The area of the region is 123,702 sq. km. The two widest separated points of the Orenburg region from west to east are 755 km apart, from north to south – 425 km apart. It shares borders with Tatarstan in the north-west, Saratov region in south-east and Chelyabinsk region in the north-east. In the east and south, it borders with the Republic of Kazakhstan (West Kazakhstan and Aktobe and Kostanai regions). The length of the border is 1,670 km.

Its administrative center is the city of Orenburg. The Municipal Formation consists of 13 urban districts, 29 municipal districts, 445 settlements. The largest cities and towns are Orenburg, Orsk, Novotroitsk, Buzuluk, Buguruslan, Guy.

The population of Orenburg region is 1,956,835 (2020).
